Subject: Reading and Phonics

At Carleton Park we place great value on teaching children the skills that they need to read, understand and enjoy books, newspapers and other text types.

In Reception and Key Stage 1 we use Phonics Play to promote and teach reading and spelling skills. This scheme follows the programme of study from Letters and Sounds. We use a range of games, interactive resources and teaching tools to engage, stimulate and support learners at each phase.

We link our Guided Reading teaching to the phonics taught, and use a range of books to ensure children are reading texts that are suitable for their ability. We like to expose the children to different text types and use online resources to share poetry, letters and other genres in group and whole class sessions.
